TAMPA, Fla. — It's often a struggle for people to emerge after serving a prison sentence and transition back into society.
But for one Tampa woman, her family’s struggle has inspired her to help others. That led Stacy Garcia to create Rehabilitation of the Heart.
The group’s mission includes helping those who feel helpless in the face of adversity such as returning to society after years in prison. That is something heartbreakingly close for Garcia.
“My father was sentenced to seventeen years in prison,” Garcia said. “My brother is serving life in prison.”
Garcia said when her dad was released from prison he had a very difficult time finding his way back into society. In the end, he committed suicide.
Garcia began the organization one year ago to help save others.
“They have a second chance in life,” she said. “They can provide for their family. They can be a father. They can be a member of society.”
A major step is in the works to provide the tools, to make that member of society goal a reality.
“We are in the process of opening a vocational training school,” Garcia said. “We have open enrollment beginning in 2023. It will be offering CDL licensing, auto glass installation and welding.”
Rehabilitation of the Heart’s long list of objectives also includes feeding the homeless, mental health class for parents and focus on low income disadvantaged children and families.
“We went to a local area that we know struggles a lot, Rowlett Park, and were able to give away one hundred back packs, full of supplies, to kids,” she said. “It was a phenomenal day.”
This new nonprofit is looking for sponsors and volunteers and financial assistance.
Garcia said this work is her medicine as a way to carry on.
“I would think this is my way for dealing with the death,” she said. “The loss of family members (and) friends.”
Garcia said that’s what makes the organizations motto even more meaningful: Make everyday epic, not just today. But everyday starts with today.
